personally i rather enjoyed Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. i thought the material was intriguing and accomplished fgcu's goal of diversifying its incoming freshman. i liked the idea of selecting a piece that wasnt difficult to read and that all freshman could share a common interest in. And as for the writing prompts i thought they were well selected and provided students with a confidance boost as it wasnt too difficult to accomplish. the simplicity of the assignment i believe may have quelled some of the fears of the incoming freshman and helped possibly in settling their nerves.
better yet tho than the book itself was the opportunity to hear from its author. Beah was extremely well spoken and easy to listen to. often times students struggle to be engaged in what a speaker is talking about but this was not the cas for Ishmael, at least not for me.
overall i believe the project is actually a good thing. it was almost a small rememberence of what i was leaving behind in high school and encouraged me to put forth my best effort in college. also it helped me get back to the idea that i had to work now and that summer was over. so yea i say that fgcu should definitely keep the assignment especially since ive already done it!
